Motel Mezcal is inspired by its Mexican heritage, weighted in the richness of craftsmanship, of weathered hands, and of sacred artisanal traditions.

Motel Mezcal is both crafted and owned by its producers, ensuring that every step of the process remains in the hands of those who care deeply about its quality. 

The result is an exceptionally smooth and refined mezcal – velvety on the palate, balanced with herbaceous notes of ripe banana, pineapple, mild oak, and a subtle smoky finish.

PLANTING & CULTIVATION

Biodiverse agave seeds are planted on Oaxaca land using organic, sustainable methods to protect and preserve the agave species. Our espadín agave is grown for a minimum of 8 years to maximise maturity for flavour and then ripened up to 2 years in the ground using the ‘Capón’ method.

A Mezcalero in Mexico

ROAST

Motel Mezcal is roasted underground in a traditional pit oven, lined with volcanic stones from the Puebla Popocatépetl volcano. Hydrated with mineral rich spring water from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca.

GRINDING

Ground by a horse drawn Chilean Tahona.

Mezcal production

FERMENTATION

100 percent natural yeast fermentation in open air pine fermentation vats. No additives – just time, tradition, and respect for the earth’s rhythms.

DISTILLATION

We distill in handcrafted copper stills, a precise method that captures the agave’s pure essence. Low and slow double distilled with purified water. Waste water is washed with limestone to irrigate the maguey fields.

Our bottles are manufactured in Mexico, made with 100% recycled glass.

Maestro Mezcalero

Daniel López played in the Maguey fields as a child, the familiar smell of smoke ever present on the horizon, the gentle dripping sound of mezcal filling the collection gourds.

López is a third generation guardian of mezcal. The López family are master craftsmen who have perfected the art of mezcal cultivation and production, employing rare and time-honoured techniques passed down through generations. It is this inherited knowledge and dedication that shape the distinctive character of Motel Mezcal.
